When; December 31, evening
Rating; PG for unfortunate deaths via terrible cooking
Characters; Shotahouse + Invited
Summary; Flynn attempts to make a full-course dinner for the New Year. Little do they know, he has a surprise for them by the end.
Log; Yuri doesn't wanna say that he told you so, but- )
As we enter the new year, I wish to give the entire City a wish of peace and joy as January begins. In Russia, my homeland, New Year's Day is a large celebration, since the national leaders forbade religion. With no Christmas, New Year's Day grew to epic proportions, complete with Father Frost -- not quite Santa Claus, but a wintry old man who is appeased with rhymes around a sweets-decorated tree -- and the giving of gifts. I would like to extend a little of that to you.

For those of you who didn't celebrate Christmas, or who may also be from a similarly structured nation, I will be trying my hand at some food preparation at Penny's Welcome Center. (Penny, you of course are not obligated to help! I simply need your kitchen.)  Except it has been ages since I cooked...alas. Whether or not you try any, you are nonetheless welcome to gather, as we celebrate the start of a new year here in our new -- temporary, but new -- home.

And, Major Raikov, if you fail to come out of your room for this, I will personally carry you out by your belt. Are there any other Russian citizens here? Solidarity benefits all, you know.

  • Dec. 31st, 2009 at 8:52 PM
I wasn't cursed, but I've been thinking all today about my New Year's Resolution.

While I'm here in the City, my resolution is to help people more. It's something I should have been doing more of all along. I may be young, but I know there's a lot I could do. I'm sure of it! I've faced many scary things while capturing and changing the cards, and I shouldn't just sit around when I could use my magic and help! I can't think of a better way to spend my time here.

[info]Hikaru-chan, do you want to work on that?

... I may have just returned this week, but if you add up all the days and months, I've been here for over a year now. And a new year is just around the corner!

[ooc: New Years Party = slow tags. ♥ Sorry for the inconvenience. ]

The new year has snuck up on me. Literally -- we were nowhere near December where I'm from. I don't have any new year's resolutions, but I do have some things I've put off doing. Might as well get them over with now.

1) I need a roommate. I have a room I've been staying in, but I don't mind moving. I don't have any baggage.

2) I need a job. I was a martial arts instructor back home, but I'll take anything that doesn't involve flipping burgers. Or heights. Is there a place where job listings are posted? A newspaper with a help wanted section?

Hey.

...does this count as calling you?

You are cordially invited to...

Acting-Commandant Flynn's New Year dinner party! So... if Flynn knows you, or if Yuri knows you... you can assume that your character's been invited to this dinner party. The thing is though that... there is one problem.

[ clears throat. ]

❝THE CAKE IS A LIE❞

In other words, while the heroic Yuri Lowell was able to make sure his darling best friend followed the recipe book [info]Ino gave him to the dot, it would seem that the final entree... the dessert... well, let's just say Flynn gave it his all. The thing looks like a visual masterpiece, and may even smell good too... but it only takes one bite.

There are plans to air this, uh, debacle on the network as well so... Let's just say that come on the condition you eat this and have a little taste of hell heaven.

Just comment and we'll arrange it with you/backdate and stuff ♥

Out of the blue, yo~

I think I've been here way too long without asking for a serious job. I'm more used to the application process and just looking in the help wanted section. Not posting on a message board or anything. For application purposes though:

→ Education: partial degree in Music Theory from Northwestern University

→ Previous work experience: Retail, at a music store. Waitress, at an Italian restaurant.

→ Skills: I can play the cello, guitar, and piano, I can sing pretty well, I'm much stronger and faster than a human, and I pick up on skills very fast.

And Happy New Year to people. It's extremely weird celebrating it here, especially without my pack.

Soon! New Year! Too-thow-zz-ahn.... too...

[a boy's hand helping to heft the griffin back some, Cat becomes visible beside Klartch]

Two thousand and ten, Klartch.

Klartch resolves! Explore more! Meet more people! Fight!

[Cat grins]

Er-- not a real fight. We think,

[An earnest look into the camera]

There should be a huge snowball fight. Maybe in Xanadu. Everyone should get involved. With forts and everything proper!

And... we want to thank the Pevensies. For Lab and the rest. ...Lucy?

Well. I guess perhaps it's a bit late for this, but no time like the present, at least that's what Mother used to say. I think what she actually meant was, "Shin, get off your rump and wash the dishes before I take the broom to you," but really it's all the same when you get right down to it, isn't it?

In the new year -- Lord, but it's strange to be passing this day without all the guys. Well, at least no one's schnockered and Ryo and Touma aren't here to laugh at me. In the new year, I resolve to be more diligent about cleaning, especially the bathroom, and not to put it off by fiddling with my fish tanks. I also resolve not to buy so many fish because it really isn't necessary and the water bill is impractical and irresponsible, plus the noise of the filters keeps Shuu awake. Also, I resolve to whine less, especially about thinks I can't or shouldn't change. Oh, and I resolve to finally learn to make Bao as good as Shuu can.

I hope everyone has a wonderful night and a year that follows in kind.

If you're wondering how those images might be read as encouraging, the simple answer is this: they are not. Not at all.

They say - whoever they are - that the New Year is supposed to be about change, which is just a less redundant way of saying that things are supposed to be new. Considering the amount of resolution lists going around this place, I don't think that's exactly uncommon here, even though I didn't see anyone saying they wanted to lose weight or take up exercising, so I guess that's new.

Good luck on all those we-are-the-world endeavors. In the meantime, who do you have to wink at to get some champagne and a big falling ball in this place?

[ooc: I apologize for posting a running, but we've got to go to a party over here and this was the only time I had to get this up.]

29 // The "New Year"

  • Dec. 31st, 2009 at 7:13 PM
Considering that this isn't a planet, it's only a small section of reality, it's hardly an actual "new year". Who knows if the sun is actually real? How, exactly, are we completing one revolution? And for that matter, why do we keep time here by Earth standards anyway?

It's all about symbolism in the City, isn't it? What the New Year represents, etc. I saw all the resolution lists and, well, I'm hardly going to bother with one of those, even if it was a curse. I wouldn't keep them anyway. The important thing, people of the City, is not the lists themselves. The lists are a formality. You're not going to follow what you've promised! Oh, maybe for a few days, or even weeks but it won't last. That's why you made the resolution. This is something about yourself you won't be able to change, and that you haven't been able to change. Very likely, you promise the same thing every year. The important thing is the comforting effect of these lists. They let you think that eventually, you can perfect yourself.

And frankly, perfection is boring. Reverting to form is far more interesting.

Oh, but, in advance, I'll wish you all a Happy New Year all the same! I'm not a spoilsport. Is anyone doing anything amusingly traditional? I can sing Auld Lang Syne just as well as anyone else.
I wasn't cursed yesterday, to make a list of goals for next year. If I had been, honestly, I'm not sure what I would have set-- I can't think of anything any other than the goals I already had, the things I've been trying to do all along, since I got here. I want to keep acting and holding plays. I want to find ways to be happy even if I don't think I deserve it. I want to keep learning new things and reading new poems and making the most of the time I have here.

Carpe diem.

But that isn't anything new.

This was the best Christmas I've ever had, because of all of you, and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.

I know the new year probably won't be much different from this one-- there'll still be bad times and curses and sometimes we'll hate it here. But I'm looking forward to it. I'm going to have a good year.

I've got everything I need to be happy.

[ooc; I wish I were cool enough to have made up lists of what my chars got everyone else, but I am not. All of his friends (meaning.... pretty much everyone he talks to) would have gotten at least a little something <3 Happy New Year everyone. Backtagging might occur due to festivities.]

Resolutions, was it? I think I'll be keeping mine to myself, since the City so kindly skipped me over for the curse yesterday. And it's already the end of the year here, even if it wasn't anywhere near that back home. Or even back in series seven...I do wonder if we've been missed yet. Even if that doesn't seem to be the way this particular 'world' works. If it is a world at all.

This isn't really the time for thinking about that though. If we haven't found the way out in all these months, it can wait one more day.

Cat, do you think Klartch will be able to stay up until midnight? I'm guessing he'd want to join in the celebrations as well.
